THEORIES OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

REFLECTION
This module offered a valuable learning experience that allowed me to delve into the captivating realm of traditional streets and Asian architectural contexts. The initial project centered around an in-depth examination of a specific traditional street, and I chose to focus on the vibrant Jalan Tun H.S. Lee in Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur. By analyzing the tangible aspects of architecture and space, as well as the intangible socio-cultural characteristics, I gained insights into the profound lexicons of traditional streets. This project provided a unique opportunity to unravel the distinct conditions that shape the place identity and socio-cultural significance of these captivating urban spaces.

Building upon the knowledge gained from the first project, the second project furthered our exploration through collaborative research and thought-provoking discussions. With a focus on tradition, modernity, and globalization in Asian architectural contexts, the group project aimed to develop a critical understanding of these interrelated concepts. The lectures provided a solid foundation, enabling us to engage in informed debates and exchange diverse perspectives. To effectively communicate our research, we were tasked with creating a video presentation and a research poster. These mediums challenged us to articulate our findings in visually compelling and concise formats while strengthening our communication and presentation skills.

Working alongside my group members, I found the discussions to be intellectually stimulating and enlightening. Our collective exploration of tradition, modernity, and globalization expanded my critical thinking abilities and fostered a deeper understanding of the intricate complexities within Asian architectural contexts. The projects not only enhanced my research skills but also nurtured an appreciation for the role of architecture in cultural preservation and transformation.

In conclusion, both projects allowed me to embark on a captivating journey of discovery and analysis. From studying the distinct characteristics of a traditional street to engaging in research-driven group discussions, I developed a multifaceted understanding of traditional streets and their broader context in Asian architectural practices. The module equipped me with valuable research and presentation skills while nurturing a profound appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and dynamic transformation present in traditional streets and their relationship with modernity and globalization.
