BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS
REFLECTION
This module comprised two projects that deepened my understanding of construction materials and building processes. In the first project, I conducted a case study on a chosen building, which is the Siamese Towers, exploring the design philosophy behind material choices and examining architectural and structural elements. To present my findings, I created a detailed A1-sized board showcasing the installation process of selected materials. The second project focused on construction drawings, emphasizing the importance of addressing building processes, structural integration, and material selection. Working in groups, we created a construction drawing set for a timber double-story terraced house, demonstrating our comprehension of structural components and proficiency in manual drawing. We also had to produce a model based on the drawings as well as secondary research, which needed a lot of planning regarding the time constraint.
These projects provided valuable insights into material selection's impact on design and construction outcomes. The case study enabled me to understand the relationship between materials, architecture, and structure. In the second project, I honed my skills in communicating complex ideas through accurate and detailed construction drawings. These experiences equipped me with practical knowledge and skills that will benefit my future architectural pursuits, allowing me to make informed decisions and effectively convey design intent in construction contexts.
